Driver Crashes Into EIU Front Gate

Eastern Illinois police arrested a man for crashing through the front entrance of Eastern Illinois University early this morning.

Eastern police say 30-year-old Lucas Grabbe of West Terre Haute was arrested for DUI after running his SUV into the EIU sign just outside of the Old Main building on 6th Street and Lincoln Avenue. WEIU radio production supervisor Rob Calhoun got an early start to his day, and while making his way to campus saw the damage first-hand.

"I noticed that there was a car that looked like it had drove straight into the sign right there in front of Old Main. The front two tires were up on the wall, and they were trying to figure out a way to get the car out of there."

Grabbe's vehicle ran into the concrete base of the gated front entrance. Eastern workers were at the scene today and have set up a barrier to keep people away from the damaged area. The university is still working on damage estimates.

Officials say Grabbe was released from jail just after nine this morning after posting bond. Grabbe is also facing charges of leaving the scene of accident from another incident in Coles County on Aug. 14.
