Decatur Soldier's Medal

Thursday, 2 May 2013

A Decatur veteran finally receives the honor he earned nearly 70 years ago.

Sergeant Fred Stolley received the U.S. Army's Soldier's Medal earlier today for his heroic service.

The medal is the highest honor an Armed Forces member can receive for non-combat heroic action.

Stolley rescued an army private from drowning in August 1944 in Scotland.

The sergeant was recognized in 1945 but never received the actual medal until today.
