Illinois tate senators cast their votes for a smoking ban at all public universities.
The Senate voted 30-22 in favor of the measure, which now moves to the Illinois house.
The bill's main goal is to reduce secondhand smoke at state-supported universities.
The measure says at least 65 thousand deaths happen each year because of secondhand smoke, and it's the third-leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
Senator Dale Righter says he's against the measure because universities have the power to make a campus bill on their own.
