Ashmore Fire Displaces Families

Monday, 29 September 2014

A fire breaks out in a small town that leaves three families without a home.

Late last night fire departments from Kansas, Oakland, Hutton, and Ashmore responded to an Ashmore apartment complex fire.

Ashmore Assistant Fire Chief Kurt Crail says around 11:30, a good samaritan drove by and spotted the complex on fire, he then knocked on the door helped the residents get out.

One of those residents, Celia Cook, says there were 11 people living in the building, including five children, who all escaped without any injuries.

Crail says many people in the community are helping out the familes affected by the fire.

''I just want to thank the community for being, you know, the community was here. The ones that, Dylan Morton stopped and pretty much got people out of the house, that's huge. That could have been a lot worse if somebody was still in the house. There was people here all night you know just making sure, running around and getting stuff if we needed it. This is an awesome community, and the other departments are awesome too. We appreciate them,'' says Crail.

The state fire marshal deemed the fire as accidental, but its specific cause is still under investigation.

The local Red Cross provided the families with hotel rooms last night but residents say they're not sure of their plans going forward.
