Campus Smoking

Monday, 24 February 2014

It could be illegal to smoke on public college campuses in Illinois come July. The bill to ban smoking on state-supported college campuses has passed the state senate, and is moving to the House. News Watch's Maggie Hockenberry found out students on the Eastern Illinois University campus have mixed opinions about the proposed ban. Southern Illinois University will also be effectively smoke-free this summer. Smoking is currently banned in dorms and within 15 feet of building entrances. Starting in July, smoking will be allowed only in designated areas in campus parking lots. The measure now heads to the full House for further debate. If the bill is passed, a person who violates the law could face disciplinary action and fines.
