Illinois election officials say close to 8,000 17-year-olds have registered to vote in next month's primary.
As News Watch reported, teenagers who turn 18 by the November election may cast a vote March 18.
Illinois is the 20th state to allow 17-year olds to vote and lawmakers say the measure expands participation in the electoral process.
The general election is November 4.
