An Arcola sailor killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor is scheduled to be buried Saturday.

Navy Electrician's Mate 3rd Class Charles Brown, then 22, was killed while serving aboard the USS West Virginia, but his remains could not be identified at the time. In 2021, Department of Defense researchers were finally able to identify Charles Brown's remains.

Brown is scheduled for burial with Navy Funeral Honors at Arcola Township Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The organization The Flagman's Mission is arranging to create a memorial with up to 600 American flags in honor of the occasion, and they are asking for volunteers to place and remove the flags.

Those who would like to help place flags are asked to meet at the Arcola Masonic Community Center at 4 p.m. Friday, and those who would like to help remove flags are asked to meet at the center at 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the group.
