The IHSA Announces Girls Flag Football

The Illinois High School Association is announcing the addition of girl's flag football in the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.

The IHSA Board of Directors approved the football state series for the fall semester of this year, administring to 100+ interested schools for the upcoming fall semester, followed by 40 plus schools ancicipating fielding a team later during the 2025-2026 school year.

Girls flag football joins a growing list of other sports and recreational activities, examples including girls wrestling and eSports in 2022, as well as boys and girls lacrosse in 2018.

"It is important for the IHSA to continue to adapt to the interests of our students and schools," says Dan Tylly, the President of the IHSA Board of Directors. "Girls flag football is somewhat unprecedented in terms of its growth and timeline for achieving an IHSA State Series. We are enthusiastic about how much has been accomplished in such a short amount of time, and expect that participation will continue to increase in the yaers ahead."

The Girls Flag Football Advisory Committee is currently looking to finalize the rulebook and structuring of the sport.

Anybody interested in officiating can begin submitting licensing applications on May 1st of this year.
