Mattoon High School Shooter in Court

Thursday, 15 February 2018

The student accused of opening fire in the Mattoon High School cafeteria last fall appeared in court again today where a psychiatrist that examined the teenager testified.

Lawrence Jeckel testified he evaluated the accused shooter two times after the shooting and says the teen suffers from severe depression and has an oppositional defiance disorder.

The judge in the case has now asked the Illinois Department of Human Services to evaluate the teen to decide if and where he'll undergo treatment.

Coles County States Attorne Brian Bower says the teenager needs to undergo treatmeant not only to help himself but protect the public.

Bower said, "I think that any mental treatment that young boy receives be in a situation of detetion secuirty so that he's not an accress to the public and to harm public and always to provide him the protection to harming himself."

Bower says the next hearing is March 29th at one.

Police say the freshman fired several rounds in the cafeteria on September 20th.

They say math teacher Angela McQueen stepped in to stop the gunman but not before a bullet hit a male student.

That student has since been treated and released from the hospital.
