A local hospital has a few suggestions for residents about getting through this cold weather.

Heath officials at HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital in Shelbyville say most importantly, cover your head.

They say you can lose as much as ten percent of your body's heat by not wearing a hat.

Officials also encourage you to dress in layers, wear gloves, and keep a set of hand warmers in your coat.

As far as space heaters, they say follow the three feet rule, which means keep it three feet from paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs.

More suggestions include, let the water in the sink drip to keep pipes from freezing.

Don't forget to bring in your pets from outisde.

Use a swim noodle or a rolled up towl at the base of the door or window to keep out cold air.

Dress your children in layers and check on elderly neighbors.
