Effingham residents and city council were hesitant to update building and fire safety codes, but now they'll be seeing changes at the start of the new year. Effingham Building Official Michelle Wilkins says the old codes were outdated and a change was long overdue.says the the Insurance Service Office of Commercial Risk Services considered the new fire and building safety codes when reassessing the Effingham fire department's rating. The city received a class 2 ISO rating. The rating scale is one through ten, with one being the highest. The city will have a list of the improved codes in the coming weeks.
