Lake Sara Bird Waste Control

Monday, 17 April 2017

Effingham officials crack down on bird waste at Lake Sara.
Former Lake Sara Water Quality Committee member, Bill Elving said, efforts at the lake include addling.
Elving said, finding goose nests is the hardest part of addling, then they mark the nest with a flag, and spray the eggs with oil
The oil seals the eggs and cuts off oxygen to the embryo.
He also said, when the committee first started addling there were about 1,500 geese at Lake Sara, and now there are about 250.
Officials said the geese drop around 1.5 pounds of waste a day.
