Deer Virus

Thursday, 22 September 2016

A deer virus has hit east-central Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says 53 suspected cases of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) have been reported.

Department officials say the deer virus is transmitted by midges that hatch from muddy areas along lakes and rivers.

Officials say the worst year for the disease in Illinois was 2012, with more than 2,000 reported cases.

The department asks hunters to report any suspected deer virus cases.
