U of I to Add More Security Cameras

Wednesday, 22 June 2016

The University of Illinois is adding to its already large network of hundreds of security cameras.

The Champaign City Council voted Tuesday night to allow the university to install eight more cameras at two busy intersections near campus.

The cameras will go up at Sixth and John streets and Fourth and Green streets in the next six months to a year.

The school already has more than 1,440 security cameras and that number will grow by 200 this year.

The university is installing the cameras, not the Champaign Police Department.

Police officials say that's because the department doesn't have the resources.

Police support the university and say the cameras have helped solved campus crimes.
