Wednesday, 10 December 2014

Recently re-elected Illinois State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka has died.

Officials say Topinka passed away less than twenty four hours after having a stroke.

Her office says Topinka reported discomfort and was admitted to a hospital this morning.

After testing she lost consciousness, she was pronounced dead shortly after two.

Earlier today, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn spoke about remembering Topinka's legacy.

Quinn also announced any discussion about replacing Topinka should be postponed as the public mourns her.

President Barack Obama also released a statement today, saying Topinka was "blunt, pragmatic, unfailingly cheerful and energetic."

Obama also says Topinka was "always willing to put politics aside to find commonsense solutions that made a difference for the people of Illinois."
