U of I Food Service Workers Vote on New Contract

Friday, 8 March 2013

Building and food-service workers at the University of Illinois' Urbana-Champaign campus are voting on whether to accept a new contract offer or go on strike Monday.

The Service Employees International Union said in a news release Friday that its more than 700 members at the campus started voting Friday and have until Sunday to cast ballots on the latest offer from the university.

If union members vote it down they would go on strike at midnight Monday.

The union and university have been negotiating since June and brought in a federal mediator last year.

The union said disagreements continue over wages and other matters.

University spokeswoman Robin Kaler said mangers will fill in where needed if workers go on strike.
