Cubs Make Deadline Deal

The Chicago Cubs made one last move before the trade deadline for Major League Baseball, sending IF/OF Emilio Bonifacio and LHP James Russell to the Atlanta Braves Thursday afternoon.

In return, the Cubs receive switch-hitting catching prospect Victor Caratini.

Caratini, a second-round product out of the Braves farm system, is hitting .279 with five homers and 42 RBIs in 87 games with Class A Rome this season.

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer likes what Caratini can do for the organization behind the plate.

"He's a guy we liked in the draft a lot," Hoyer said.

"We've said it all along, catching is a weakness in our system and we don't have enough of it. He's a switch-hitting catcher who can control the strike zone and has performed well. So we're excited to get him."

Before leaving the Cubs, Bonifacio was batting .279 on the season through 69 games.

Russell, 28, was 0-2 with one save and a 3.87 ERA in 44 appearances this year.
