Bill Aims to Improve Construction Project Communication

State transportation officials would have to hold additional meetings with local officials ahead of construction projects under a bill before the Illinois General Assembly.

The bill, proposed by Rep. Brad Hallbrook, R-Shelbyville, would require the Illinois Department of Transportation to conduct pre-bid, pre-construction meetings with municipal, township and county elected officials and with local law enforcement, fire and medical providers in Department districts to discuss the scope and nature of those projects.

The proposal comes in response to a deadly chemical spill near Teutopolis last September. That spill occurred while traffic was diverted from an early crash on Interstate 70, which was under construction at the time.
