Military officials have identified the remains of a Charleston soldier killed in World War II, nearly 80 years after his death.

U.S. Army Private Harold Poulter, 23, was killed near the town of Biesdorf, Germany in February 1945, but his remains could not be immediately recovered because of intense fighting in the area, according to officials with the Department of Defense.

In 1951, the American Graves Registration Command recovered American remains in a wooded area near Biesdorf but could not identify them. The remains were interred at the U.S. Military Cemetery at Tunisia.

In 2022, Department of Defense and American Battle Monuments Commission Personnel exhumed the inidentified remains. Using forensic analysis, researchers identified the remains as those of Private Poulter, officials have now announced.

Private Poulter is scheduled to be buried in Lerna on June 4, officials said.
