University of Illinois To Transition to Online Classes Due to COVID-19

Wednesday, 11 March 2020

University of Illinois System President Tim Killeen and the chancellors from the system's three universities issued new guidelines for students, faculty, and staff amid the global COVID-19 pandemic Wednesday evening.

Leaders say there are no confirmed cases among faculty, staff, or students, but their proactive policies are focused on curbing the virus.

Courses at all the campuses, including Urbana-Champaign, Springfield, and Chicago will immediately begin transitioning to online or other alternative methods to help limit the transmission of the virus.

Officials hope to complete the transition by March 23rd, and say these alternative methods will continue until further notice, though they expect it will be temporary.

Students will have the option of studying remotely from home or from their campus residence after spring break, but the all three campuses will remain open and ready to serve students, including residence and dining halls.

U of I leaders are also suspending events with more than 50 attendees that are university-sponsored or hosted by registered student organizations, effective Friday, March 13.

Events may occur via livestream or other telecommunications, or be postponed to a future date.

All university-sponsored international travel is prohibited, along with non-essential domestic travel until further notice.

Officials say personal international travel is strongly discouraged, and they urge caution and the exercise of good judgment for personal domestic travel.
