The Illinois State Police say the roads were a lot safer this Labor Day!

Illinois State Police said figures show only five fatal traffic accidents were reported this year, compared to the 19 last year.

Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz said it was one of the safest Labor Day travel weekends in the last six years.

Schmitz said the state police will continue working to reduce the number of fatalities.

State police issued more than 6-thousand tickets and nearly 4-thousand warnings for offenses like speeding and not wearing seatbelts.
