The Mattoon high school girls basketball team awaits what could be their toughest game of the year, while the Charleston girls basketball team said goodbye to their 2017 season.

Around this time last season the Mattoon girls basketball team struggled through their conference schedule, but this year they're one of the top seeds in the IHSA sectionals.

The Greenwave advance to the sectional semifinals, pushing their all-time most wins to 29-1 for the season.

Mattoon defeated Champaign Central Thursday night, 67-51, taking home the regional title.

This is the first time since 2003 the Greenwave have won a regional championship and will have the weekend to get extra practice in.

But tonight, they'll be watching a toss up between Effingham and Lincoln High School to see who they'll play next.

The Greenwave are strong on both ends of the court with point guard Avery Jackson running the plays and forward Ashlyn MacDonald ready for all grabs under the net.

Semifinals get underway Monday at MacArthur High School in Decatur.

For Charleston it's just the opposite, as they hang up their jerseys for the season.

The Trojan's journey to state was cut short with a final record of 20-7 after an upset by Paris last night.

The teams season may be over, but two key shooters on the Charleston squad advanced individually.

Guards Paige Swango and Aislinn Parish made it to the next round in the three-point shootout, giving the Trojans a chance to bring home a state win.

Other local high school girls basketball teams continued on in class 2A.

Teutopolis defeated Newton in a sectional championship overtime, 62-50, ending Newton's season with a 23-8 record.

Breese Mater Dei was also in action against Nashville and the Knights won their 20th game of year after topping the Hornets, 46-25.
