Salaita's Settlement with the University of Illinois

Thursday, 12 November 2015

The University of Illinois and Steven Salaita have reached a settlement putting an end to their 14-month dispute.

The university’s Board of Trustees approved the proposed agreement in their meeting Thursday with a 9-1 vote.

In the agreement, the university will pay Salaita $600,000 and cover the cost of his attorneys, a total value of $875,000, and in return Salaita will not be re-hired for by the university or seek future employment.

Salaita was offered a job by the university to start in fall 2014. Then-Chancellor Phyllis Wise rescinded the offer after his tweets objecting to Israeli action against Palestinians.

School officials want to be clear that the university is not admitting to any wrongdoing by ending this lawsuit.

The settlement payments will be covered by the university’s self-insurance and institutional funds.
