A Decatur company plans to lay off hundreds of employees.

Caterpillar, Inc. is laying off about 460 employees permenantly, effective in June.

In 2011, the company added about 300 jobs to the Decatur facility.

Caterpillar says the cuts are in response to reduced global demand for mining equipment.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the reductions come at a tough time for Decatur because the city has the highest unemployment rate among Illinois' metro areas.
