Panthers Drop Weekend Series

Tuesday, 2 April 2013

The Eastern Illinois baseball team returned home from Jacksonville after being swept by the Gamecocks in a three-game series this weekend.

After dropping the first two games 3-2 and 5-2, respectively, the Panthers lost on a walk-off homerun in the series finale.

The 0-8 start to Ohio Valley Conference play this season is the worst since the club joined the OVC in 1997.

Eastern Head Coach Jim Schmitz talked about trying to gather some momentum heading into the rest of the season.

"Well, we talked about that a little bit on Friday after the hard loss on Thursday night," Schmitz said. "You say all the cliches, you say all the right things, but we just have to play a little better baseball. Once we do that, then we can get some momentum and get into a winning streak like we did last year."

The Panthers closed out the 20-12 regular season by winning 11 of their last 15 games.

Eastern takes on Illinois State at home on Wednesday.

The first pitch at Coaches Stadium in Charleston is scheduled for 3 p.m.
