The City of Shelbyville is on track to soon take over development of the Dam West Recreation Area at Lake Shelbyville.
Currently operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Dam West includes the Dam West Beach (commonly called the Ninth Street Beach), a beach pavilion and a boat ramp. It's a popular location for local residents and hosts the annual IHSA State Bass Fishing Tournament.
Shelbyville Mayor Jeff Johnson says the location will be added to an existing lease with the Corps of Engineers that includes part of nearby Forest Park. The contract was signed in 2023 and lasts for 25 years. He says the lease doesn't cost the city anything, but it is responsible for maintenance and development.
Johnson notes ensuring access for residents and economic development of the location are key priorities moving forward. He says potential ideas include a space for food trucks, a restaurant and a courtesy boat dock. The Mayor says the city plans to host public meetings and work closely with the community and local stakeholders to determine future directions. Johnson attributes the deal to a decades-long positive relationship between the City of Shelbyville and the Corps of Engineers.
City officials say the fee schedule for use of the area is expected to remain the same this year.
The Shelbyville City Council has already agreed to the move and contract changes are being finalized by the Corps of Engineers.
