Boaters on Lake Shelbyville are being advised to use extra caution as a dredging project takes an unexpected turn. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, low water levels have made it unsafe to submerge a dredging pipeline as originally planned.
As a result, the pipeline will temporarily float on the lake, posing a potential hazard to recreational boaters. Officials say the line will be securely anchored and clearly marked with white and red buoys placed every 30 feet, along with warning signs and flashing lights to improve visibility.
The Corps of Engineers says the situation will be reevaluated once water levels rise closer to summer. In the meantime, boaters are urged to maintain a safe distance from the floating pipeline and all dredging equipment in the area.
