The Indiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Vigo County.
The shooting happened Wednesday at a residence at 7479 South Carlisle Street in Vigo County, said authorities.
State Police said deputies were dispatched to 7479 Carlisle Street to conduct a welfare check on a man who was suicidal.
An off-duty Vigo County deputy attempted to talk to 45-year-old James Dockery, while another on-duty deputy arrived on scene and noticed Dockery had a gun, said Indiana State Police.
Police said deputies told Dockery to drop his rifle, but he didn't and pointed the weapon at authorities.
The off-duty deputy, who was given a department issued service rifle, shot Dockery who died at the scene.
Off-duty deputy Dayton Huebner has been placed on administrative leave, which is customary in officer-involved shootings, said police.
The on-duty deputy has been identified as Sergeant Chris Hawkins, said officials.
The investigation continues.
