8:30 p.m. | Austin City Limits: Kacey Musgraves

2013 Country Music Association New Artist of the Year Kacey Musgraves writes songs that “cut sharply through the lies people tell themselves” (The Guardian). This honest songwriting, in combination with an incredible voice, has Musgraves on a path to superstardom. She makes her Austin City Limits debut performing songs from the #1 country LP Same Trailer Different Park.

Hailing from Golden, Texas, Musgraves began performing at fairs while still in single digits. She has been writing songs since age 9 and eventually, like her friend Miranda Lambert, moved to Nashville. Both competed on the singing competition program Nashville Star in 2007. Musgraves only came in seventh, but the visit was enough for her to plant her flag on Music Row. She scored a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell, putting her in the room with great songwriters such as Luke Laird and Shane McAnally, with whom Musgraves wrote the Miranda Lambert smash “Mama’s Broken Heart.”

Musgraves, who cites John Prine and Ray Wylie Hubbard as songwriting inspirations, truly made her mark with her major label debut Same Trailer Different Park. Called “one of the most fully-formed, arresting debuts Nashville’s seen in years” by American Songwriter, Same Trailer spawned the hit singles “Blowin’ Smoke” and “Merry Go ‘Round” and garnered praise from Rolling Stone and The New York Times. Country Weekly wrote, “Each track evokes an emotion, a giggle, a tear or a memory, but always a hunger for what’s next.” With the album, she was nominated for multiple Country Music Association Awards, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year, the latter of which she won.
