Hate Crime and Bicycle Laws

Wednesday, 10 January 2018

While used car salesmen have new laws to abide by, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announces new hate crime laws as well.

Officials said the new laws specifically focus on cyber stalking, and add new acts that can be prosecuted as hate crimes.

Among the acts that can now be labeled hate crimes, the transmission of obscene messages through social media, acts of online intimidation, and cyber stalking.

Madigan said the new laws are to combat the rapid rise of hate crimes being committed in 2017.

The cyber hate crime laws aren't the only legal change put into effect this month.

Officials said Illinois drivers and cyclists now have new laws to abide by when they hit the road.

They said the most notable of the three new laws gives drivers the ability to pass cyclists in no passing lanes, as long as they stay under the given speed limit.

The other laws give bike riders the right to legally ride on road shoulders, a practice commonly used by riders, as well as the use of rear tail lights instead of rear reflectors when riding at night.
