ISP Investigating Fatal Crashes Involving Teens

Thursday, 18 May 2017

The Illinois State Police say a 16-year-old has died following a car crash in Douglas County.

Police say the crash happened on U.S. 36 about 2.5 miles east of Interstate 57.

Police say a semi-truck using its hazard lights was stopped in the road due to another traffic crash.

They say substantial winds caused a large dust cloud to blow across the road reducing visability.

Police say the 16-year-old driver from Mahomet did not see the truck stopped in the road because of the dust cloud and ran into the back of the semi.

Authorities say the 16-year-old driver was taken to Carle Hospital in Urbana and pronounced dead.

Two other teenage passengers were taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The state police are also releasing details of another fatal crash in Crawford County.

They say a vehicle carrying six teenagers crashed on County Road 900 North just east of Country Road 725.

Police say a car driven by a 16-year-old female was traveling too fast on CR 900 and lost control on a patch of gravel.

They say the vehicle left the road, hit a ditch, overturned and slammed into a tree.

Authorities say the other passengers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

No names are being released at this time.
