The Eastern Illinois softball and baseball teams are mourning the loss of a former coach.

Eastern Illinois Athletics says Bill McCabe passed away April 20th.

McCabe served as the Panthers baseball coach from 1963-65 and again from 1967-74.

He retired following the 1974 season, and served for the next 13 years as the assistant to the Dean of the

School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation until 1987.

McCabe won 201 games as the Panthers head coach and recorded 269 total career victories including time spent as the head coach at Franklin College in Indiana.

He was inducted into the EIU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Association of College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1977.

Two of his EIU teams had success in the postseason with the 1964 team reaching the NAIA World Series finishing with a 23-7 record.

He would guide the 1973 team to a third place finish at the NCAA College Division World Series.

McCabe was chosen the 1973 District IV Coach of the Year at the NCAA College Division and NAIA District 20 Coach of the Year in 1964.
