The University of Illinois and Arrow Ambulance are teaming up to provide medical transportation for injured police dogs.

Medical Director of Carle Regional EMS and Arrow Ambulance, Doctor Michael Smith said, a U of I veterinarian will train Arrow crew members in dog emergency medical care.

Smith says the training will be offered to crews in Champaign, Douglas, and Vermilion counties.

Officials say Arrow will treat and transport the dogs for free.

U of I College of Veterinary Medicine says the vet hospital has treated nearly 60 police dogs in the past five years.
