A local university starts using a new method to send out urgent alerts.
Officials at Eastern Illinois University are encouraging students, staff, and faculty to sign up for "Alert EIU".
Its a new emergency notification system that can send e-mail alerts and text messages to cell phones.
Officials say Alert EIU will relay emergency notifications like weather events or crime related matters.
They say there's no cost to sign-up.
