U of I Med School Named

Wednesday, 17 June 2015

The new medical school planned at the University of Illinois' flagship campus will keep its name.

And the plan to name the school after a local hospital might not be the last time a piece of the university is named for a private entity.

A campus Academic Senate board on Monday endorsed the Carle Illinois College of Medicine name.

Carle Foundation hospital is contributing $100 million to the project.

Just last week, the university said it mistakenly had not asked faculty for input on the name.

The medical school is the first college within the university to be named for a private entity.

Chancellor Phyllis Wise says the Urbana-Champaign campus will soon start a fundraising campaign with the goal to name colleges after major donors.
