Scam artists are preying on Illinois residents with student loan debts.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is filing five lawsuits against companies that charged student loan borrowers a fee, with the false promise to relieve debt.
She says this violates the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.
This act bans companies from charging people upfront fees, for so-called debt settlement services.
