EIU March for Ferguson

Thursday, 28 August 2014

"We just wanted to bring ourselves and the EIU community up to date with everything that's going on. Because like I said there were so many stories that we didn't know the actual story so we researched and found out stuff. So it was more of an awareness thing." A goal the sorority says they accomplished marching around campus ... holding their hands and signs up ... in support of Michael Brown. Fisher says with everything happening in Ferguson ... it's time to come together and show there's a way to get messages across without violence. "The march and discussion Theta Zeta came up with on their own. It was just a good idea we came up with on our own to show a positive way because we started to see too many negative things about the situation and we just wanted to do a peaceful march." A march that included nearly fifty students, faculty and staff members. Student Brian Hannah was part of the event. He says like many at tonight's march ... everyone should educate themselves before retaliating. And Eastern Director of Housing and Dining Mark Hudson ... says we also need to focus on better communication. "When you see images or you hear about things that happen that are that horrific you feel that it wouldn't happen in the United States. It wouldn't happen in your country, in your state, or in your home town. that's what the first thought is that comes to mind. That its happening a few hours away from here. You need to educate yourself. That was the whole point of tonight just to be educate and to show people what's going on." "What we have to do is focus on how we can make it better. And I think we do it by listening to each other and holding events like these here where people have a chance to talk about what's on their mind and people need to listen and try and figure out what we can do to try and help all of our situations so we can live in a peaceful world where people feel valued." And also in a world where Hudson says ... people can be heard. "People have to pay attention to each other they have to listen and focus. And from that listening and communication come the answers. And the answers is what eventually will cause us all to feel validated and feel important and be important and from that comes a harmony that I think we all yearn to feel."
