The National Park Service has chosen the Marshall Business Historic District to be on the National Register of Historic Places.
Officials say the development of Marshall and its place along the National Road helped to map westward expansion in the 1820s.
The Marshall Business Historic District joins eleven other historic districts from Illinois on the register.
