Governor Pat Quinn has marked April 22nd as earth day here in Illinois. Today he urged residents to do their part by getting outdoors to help keep Illinois beautiful. Students at Jefferson Elementary school in Charleston can say they did just that! And it's safe to say they are all winners! Students in Mrs. Lauren Covington's Sixth grade class celebrated "Earth day" in a unique way this year . By picking up the streets of Charleston. Sixth grade teacher Lauren Covington says today, students were made aware of the difference they could make. The students traveled nearly a mile away to the campus of Eastern Illinois University. Covington says it couldn't have been a more perfect day to celebrate planet earth. Covington says no matter the age, students should understand how the little things can add up to make a big difference. The first Earth Day was in 1970. It was created in the U.S. to increase public awareness of environmental problems. Now it's celebrated every year by more than a billion people in 180 nations.
