A Shelbyville police dispatcher is saving the lives of pets in her spare time. Penny Standerfer has worked for over four years to find homes Shelby County's misplaced dogs and cats, and she does it all for free. She says it all started in 2006 and 2007 when animal control asked her to take a photo of a special dog they wanted to find a home for. Since then, Standerfer says devotes any free time she has to photographing the animals and putting advertisements in the local newspaper. County officials have credited Standerfer for bringing Shelby county's euthanization rates down and saving the shelter hundreds of dollars. She says volunteers are always welcome. She can be reached through "Saving Orphaned Animals" by phone at (217) 774-2141.
