EIU Town Hall Meeting

Thursday, 31 January 2013

Hundreds turned out for a town hall meeting at Eastern Illinois University to discuss racial tension in the community. The meeting was prompted after alleged racial slurs appeared on Facebook. The comments were directed towards an Eastern student arrested for his involvement in a fight outside a Charleston bar. The fight happened January 27th outside the Penalty Box. Police say it was a large fight involving Eastern Illinois University students and gunfire. The morning of the crime authorities arrested an African American student. Two days later, they asked the public for help in identifying another man who is also African American. In both cases, police posted the information on their Facebook Page. That information generated a lot of comments many described as racial and the reason why a town hall meeting was called on Eastern's campus. More meetings with city and university leaders are planned in the future.
