New Fire Law to Protect Illinois Sororities and Fraternities
College fraternities and sororities will now need to install automatic fire sprinkler systems under a new Illinois law.
City of Champaign building safety supervisor Garry Bowman says they're already ahead of the game, and have installed fire sprinkler systems in many of the homes.
Bowman says not only does this law make it much safer for students, but they even have a way of checking the system for errors.
Deputy Chief of the Champaign Fire Department Steve Clarkson says the sprinklers give residents a better chance of surviving.
The law requires new fraternity and sorority buildings built after January 1, 2011 to have the systems.
Older fraternities and sororities have until 2019 to install them.
