Lakers Regional Title

The Lady Lakers are at it again!

For the second year in a row, the Lake Land College softball team has won the NJCAA Division One Regional Tournament.

They beat Wabash Valley College with a final score of 9-5.

The Lakers will go on to the NJCAA Division One National Tournament with a 52-5 record.

The tournament is May 17th-19th in St. George, Utah.

Their first game is scheduled for the 17th.

The time is yet to be determined.

EIU Wins Fourth OVC Track Title

Eastern Illinois track and field seniors ended their careers undefeated in Ohio Valley Conference Track Championships.

The Panther men and women both won their fourth straight OVC Outdoor titles Saturday afternoon.

The EIU men won scoring 246.5 points with Southeast Missouri second with 193 points and Eastern Kentucky a distant third with 90.5 points.

The EIU women won scoring 179.5 points edging second place Southeast Missouri with 170 points.

Murray State was third with 112 and Jacksonville State fourth with 111.

Spoo Named to Hall of Fame

Former Eastern Illinois football coach Bob Spoo has been elected to the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame.

The school said Wednesday in a news release that the longtime coach will be inducted during a ceremony June 1 in Nashville, Tenn.

Spoo was head coach at Eastern Illinois for 25 seasons. He retired at the end of the 2011 season with a 144-131-1 record. Eastern Illinois joined the conference in 1996 and Spoo had 68 OVC wins. That's the fourth-highest total in league history.

Spoo's teams won five OVC titles. The most recent was in 2009. He was also conference coach of the year three times.

Eastern Illinois joined the conference in 1996.

CHS Softball Field Named After Long Time Coach

Long time coach of the Charleston High School softball team is going to have her name placed in CHS history.

Head coach, Karen Karch will be recognized this Saturday as the softball diamond will be renamed the Karen Karch softball field.

Coach Karch, has coached a total of 32 consecutive years where she has gone 428-421 throughout her career.

She has been the only coach for the softball team since the start of the team back in 1981.

Meet Cancelled, Dedication Postponed

The Charleston High School girl's track and field team's triangular meet against Mt. Zion and Taylorville has been cancelled.

The dedication set to take place prior to the meet (4:15P.M. on April 30th) has been postponed to the Big Trojan meet set for Monday, May 9th.

Illini in NFL Draft

In Champaign, it is expected that the University of Illinois will have a few of their former football studs taken the NFL draft.

One in particular is expected to go somewhere in round one.

Whitney Mercilus, a former Illini defensive end, led the NCAA in sacks this season with 16.

The first-team All-American is projected to go as early as the 18th overall or could fall back as far as the mid-twenteys.

Other players to watch for from the Illini in tonight's draft include wide reciever A.J. Jenkins and Offensivelineman Jeff Allen.

Laker Women in Regional Play

The Lake Land College softball team went undefeated in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference, are currently on a 39 game win streak and have more than 300 strike outs!

The Lady Lakers are set to compete in the region 24 tournament.

The tournament is set to start on Friday for a double-header.

LLC is the number 1 seed in the tournment, they'll take on number 8 seeded Southeastern Illinois College with the first game set for a 2 P.M. start.

EIU to face IUPUI

THe Eastern Illinois softball team will welcome IUPUI tomorrow to Charleston.

EIU played the Jaguars in their first game of the year, down at the Georgia State Invitational, and came away with the 3-0 win, Steph Maday getting the shut out while striking out seven.

But after their crushing loss this past weekend against Eastern Kentcky their looking to bounce back tomorrow night.

Game one of their double header is tomorrow at 4:00 at Willams field in Charleston.

Football Spring Scrimmage

The Eastern Illinois football team had quite the workout Saturday during their 2nd spring scrimmage.

In just one hour and 15 minutes, the Panthers ran 150 plays!
Panther quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, passed a total of 411 yards, going 28 for 37 in passing, with three touchdowns.

The Panthers will be back in action this Saturday at O'Brien Stadium for their Spring Game.
Kick-off is set for 6 P.M. with a cook-out planned for 5 P.M.

Track Sign Dedication

After 31 consecutive Apollo Conference Championships from 1977-2007, a sign is being erected at the Charleston High School track and field complex to honor the girl's track and field program.
The dedication is set for Monday April 30th during the CHS track meet which starts at 4:15 p.m.
Former Trojan athletes and coaches are invited to attend the dedication!

Spoonhour Introduced

The new face of Eastern Illinois University men's basketball program has arrived.
Today Jay Spoonhour was introduced to the public after being named the new head coach of the program late last week.
Athletic Director Barbara Burke and the University selection committee feel like they've found their coach to change this program around.
Coach Spoonhour has complied 100 wins as a head coach at the Junior College level including winning the NJCAA National Championship in 2001 with Wabash Valley College.
When asked when the recruiting process is going to start he said "right after this press conference is over" but there's still quite a bit of time till the season officially starts.
